ESSAY 17: LIVING TODAY VS. LIVING IN THE PAST.

Posted on: April 19, 2009

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Living today is more comfortable and easier than when your grandparents were children.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Recently, my grandparents often recall how difficult their lives were when they were young, claiming that my generation has much easier lives than they had. I agree with them. In fact, life today is much more comfortable and easier than it was in my grandparents’ youth for some reasons.

First, technology has made modern-day life much more comfortable than in the past. During my grandparents’ time, life was rough and hard because all the work was done without any modern tool, so they had to do their laundry by hand, walked from one place to another by feet. Furthermore, there was limited in entertainment choices in the past. They could at best listen to the radio or perhaps watch a black-and-white movie for pleasure. Today, however, living has become a lot easier thanks to technological developments. We launder our clothes with washing machine, uses buses, subways, or cars to move around. We also enjoy home theater systems, DVDs, and video games. Technology has definitely improved our lives.

In addition, people today have more leisure time than they did before. People no longer have to work very long hours like my grandparents did. Since my grandparents were farmers, they had to work in the rice field all day long even without resting on weekends. In contrast, many people today, including my parents, simply work from nine to five on weekdays and take weekends off. They therefore have much free time than my grandparents did, so they can spend more time on leisure activities. They go to the movies, go to the gym, or take trips. All these activities have positive affect on their quality of living.

In conclusion, people today have more comfortable and easier lives than in the past. This is the results of technological developments and the extra leisure time available. These factors will make our live even more comfortable in the future.

Your introduction is a good one. The conclusion is still a little bit better than previous ones.

On the body part, your 1st paragraph is quite good, But your second paragraph is weaker.

Here is the things I would do before I write the essay:

How to write an essay

After reading the topic, this is what I think in my mind:

What are the differences between the past and the present? Are the differences making living today is more easier than in the past? So, what are they? Then I write down a list of the following stuffs (which my grandparents didn’t have them in the past, but I have them now):

(brainstorming step)

1./Airplane

2./Car (bus)

3./Motorcycle (dream, wave, dylan)

4.Phones (home and cell phone)

5.Television,

6.computer,

7. Washing machine, dryer,

8./Water,

9. electric, natural gas (ga dùng nấu ăn, chạy máy sưởi), gasoline (xăng)

10./ agriculture equipment

11./farm equipments, water pump,

I would sum up the above things and place them into three  ideas and use each of them as a controlling idea in each body’s paragraph.

The first three things (1,2,3)= transportation

The next three things (4,5,6)= communication, entertainment

The following three things (7,8,9) = energy (utility)

I read the topic again to make sure I won’t get loss

Living today is more comfortable and easier than when your grandparents were children.

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

[I try to spend around 3 minutes to read the topic, and write down the above things.

Now, I have an outline like this]

Outline (dàn bài)

I ./ introduction (nhập đề)

II./ body  (thân bài)

1./transportation,

2./ communication

3./ entertainment

4./energy.

III./ conclusion (kết luận)

I read the topic of the essay and will use most of the words in the topic to write my introduction and conclusion.

So my introduction is:

I./ There are many things that make living today is more comfortable and easier than when my grandparents were children. I agree with that. To my view, three of the most important things are related to transportation, communication (entertainment) and energy.

My conclusion will be like this:

III./ In conclusion, living today is more comfortable and easier than when my grandparents were children because today we use more of the following things than in the past,  transportation, communication (entertainment) and energy

(I  will try to write 3 or 4 body paragraphs later)

NT  are you able to write the body paragraphs?
