Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is more important to give students prizes or awards for their efforts (trying) than for their achievements (successes or grades).
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Nowadays, many educators believe that only the most outstanding students with highest grades receive prizes and awards. I dislike this thinking very much. I believe that the students should be given awards or prizes for their effort rather than their achievements.
First, if students can be presented awards or prize for their effort, they will have a desire to study harder. In my school, many bad students try very hard to increase their grades, but there is no motivity. They know that they will never come first. They know that there is no award or prize for them if they get a better grade so they give up and become worse and worse. If the entire students, no matter how bad they are, can have a chance to win, they will be come competitive. And if all the students try to get better grades, it will increase overall level of the class, or even the entire school.
Second, presenting the awards to students who try hard will increase their confidence levels. They will realize that they could be the winner though they did not come first, and the good students are not the only one who can get a trophy. This makes them work better and better in the future, encourage them to keep moving forward.
In sum, school should reward students for trying and not just give award to the best students. This will help worst student gain confidence and encourage them to try harder. I think all the schools should use this system of awarding prize for a better education.
